Who are the 16 Arhats?
The 16 arhats are eminent disciples of Buddha Shakyamuni. According to the scriptures, Buddha requested them to protect the Dharma for the benefit of sentient beings. Thus, at the time of their parinirvana, they vowed to remain in the world and uphold the Dharma until the time of the future Buddha, Maitreya.
